The climate-change deniers, led in the US by President George Bush and many others in the US Republican party, saw their “challenge” to the reality of global warming collapse on the news of dying polar bears. Until the bears intervened, the deniers did an effective job of managing the news and discrediting (rather than disputing) scientific findings that suggested that warming was happening.
However, they had no response to the news that arctic polar bears were drowning because they couldn’t swim the 400 mile gap that had opened up between the ice flows they prowled and land. It was “emotional” and, in matters of public opinion, “emotional” trumps all rational argument. The polar bears were the “poster child” that global warming needed. That was 2 years ago now.
All resistance to the reality of global warming (except for the completely lunatic fringe of deniers) collapsed with the news this year that the polar icecap was disappearing. This year, it shrank in size by an area six times the size of California. It’s now expected to melt away completely in summer by 2013. The earliest previous estimate for a clear Arctic Ocean was some time around 2045.
The reason for this campaign is that:
I suspect that action to offset the consequences of Global Warming is woefully insufficient.
I’ll discover if I’m right, as I gradually investigate it.
